Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) approves Northern Lights Express Route for further study

October 10, 2011

In June 2011, a Concept-Level Engineering Report for the Northern Lights Express (NLX) Intercity Passenger Rail project was submitted to the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) that detailed the necessary infrastructure improvements that would be required to operate 110 mph in the corridor. The Concept-Level Engineering Report, developed by Quandel Consultants and submitted by SRF Consulting Group on behalf of Mn/DOT, analyzed three routes in the corridor between Minneapolis/St. Paul and Duluth. On July 29, 2011, Mn/DOT received a letter stating that the FRA “concurred with the request by Mn/DOT that Route 9 (BNSF Route) be carried forward as the preferred build alternative” for NLX. Mn/DOT received permission to proceed with the environmental evaluation of the BNSF Route and the No Build Alternative. Major milestone for the NLX project!
