Quandel staff offers extensive experience in railroad and transit planning and engineering with numerous successful projects and satisfied clients. Examples include work for Michigan DOT, Wisconsin DOT, Illinois DOT, Indiana DOT, Ohio DOT, Minnesota DOT, Iowa DOT, Missouri DOT and Colorado DOT. We have worked with virtually all the Class 1 freight railroads, Metra and Amtrak and enjoy excellent relationships with the railroad personnel.Quandel provided high speed and intercity passenger rail planning and design services to the nine state consortium of the Midwest leading to the region receiving more than $2.5 Billion in federal funding.
Quandel offers rail engineering services from conceptual design through preliminary engineering and final design including track alignment, roadbed, drainage, roadway and traffic and general civil design functions. We use Bentley Microstation V8i and Rail-Track Suite for railway geometric design and Primavera SureTrak and Microsoft Project for project scheduling. We employ John Chance’s Flip 7 and Bentley’s Descartes V8i software for LIDAR data processing and extraction for topographic and DTM mapping. In addition, we have extensive experience in working with ESRI ArcGIS for engineering and environmental applications. Our staff has decades of experience in intercity passenger rail, commuter rail, freight rail, light rail and heavy rail mass transit design.
A key component of many of our projects is an operational analysis of combined passenger and freight traffic in a shared rail corridor. Where the corridor includes multiple tracks, crossing traffic, frequently scheduled passenger service, dense freight operations, and high speed passenger service, a sophisticated simulation model is required to evaluate capacity and optimize operations in the corridor. Quandel uses Berkley Simulation Software’s Rail Traffic Controller software for such applications. Where operations are very predictable or infrequent, our internally developed, Rail Corridor Analysis Tool, an excel spreadsheet based train performance calculator and stringline generator is often sufficient.
